Death at Sturgis

On one of our rides, we decided to enjoy the majestic beauty of God’s creation by cruising to the Crazy Horse Memorial and then down to Custer State Park. Traffic in our direction was pretty light that morning and only slightly busier in the oncoming northbound lanes. We were enjoying the ride — but that was about to dramatically change.

Looking Back

Although Sprain is not his real name, his story is true. He is a smart rider. He has plans further out than tomorrow, so he does not take risks just for the thrill of it. On this day, however, a series of choices and events will conspire against Sprain that will cause him to give up the motorcycle for some time. Today, he will wreck his bike.

Check Your Ego

Almost as if in slow motion, I watched him twist the throttle and try to do an endo (make his bike stand on the front wheel). The rear wheel lifted off the pavement, but then he lost control. He made a valiant effort to jump off the bike before it flipped over, but didn’t quite make it. He landed on the ground, remaining motionless for a few seconds as if trying to comprehend what had just happened.

Safety Over Comfort

About halfway down the mountain, there was hardly any traffic. I was coasting at the 35-mph speed limit when I came around a corner and saw a pickup truck stopped in the middle of the highway. What could I do? Brake? Run into the back of the truck? Drive into oncoming traffic?
