Know Your Options

Late winter 2012 found me on a four-day mission flying a UC-35 to transport distinguished visitors to various locations throughout Europe. The second day of the mission had us departing Bydgoszcz, Poland, at mid-morning, refueling in Bucharest, Romania, then continuing to Ankara, Turkey.

Cleared for a Near Miss

Our crew in the UH-60 Black Hawk was a good mix with a 1,100-hour night vision goggle pilot in command in the left seat and myself, a 650-hour day/night PC acting as the pilot in the right seat.

Closing the Shortcut Road

Everyone is a Range Safety

It was a drill weekend and we were heading to the range for hand grenade training. I had just assumed command of my company and was eager to gauge my unit’s range safety program. My predecessor couldn’t execute a thorough handoff with me before I took over; therefore, I had a lot to learn about my new Soldiers.

Heading for a Fall

Many of us are guilty of trying to hop a ladder a few feet to the side instead of climbing down and moving it the proper way. Or maybe you’ve done the suicide lean by extending your body as far to the side as possible to get to a spot that’s just out of reach.
