Command Sergeant Major Gibbs was born in Trinidad and Tobago and raised in East Orange, New Jersey. He enlisted in the United States Army in and completed both Infantry One Station Unit Training (OSUT) and Basic Bradley Crew Training at Fort Benning, Georgia. CSM Gibbs earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Post University in Waterbury, Connecticut, and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from the University of Texas at El Paso, Texas.
CSM Gibbs is married to the former Tricia Dawson of Cordele, Georgia, and they are parents to three sons.
