cold weather on-duty image

Operations in cold and mountainous regions are not new to the U.S. Army.

Ever since the Revolutionary War, when the ill-equipped and poorly trained Army of General Washington suffered in the cold at Valley Forge, some phase of almost every conflict in which this country has been engaged was fought in mountains, cold weather or both.

The materials on this page are designed to help protect Soldiers in extreme cold. Topics include the proper wear and use of the Extended Cold Weather Clothing System (ECWCS), Cold Temperature and Arctic Protection System (CTAPS), Fire Retardant Environmental Ensemble (FREE), other issued cold weather clothing items, the Military Sleep System (MSS) and other cold weather TTPs.

Thanks to the Northern Warfare Training Center at Fort Greely, Alaska, for assisting the U.S. Army Combat Readiness Center in the collection of tools and resources for the Artic Warfare Operations page, which we will continue to build upon and provide additional tools and resources. For additional cold weather resources and training information please visit the Northern Warfare Training Center website.

As always, USACRC welcomes your feedback.
