Although this video is comical, ladder safety is no joke. We commonly receive reports of Soldier fatalities or permanent total disabling injuries from falls in and around their home or barracks. These included falls from heights, such as ladders.
Keep these home fall-prevention measures in mind before you take that next step:
- Ensure your ladders have stable footing and have been inspected for damage before use.
- Consider hiring a professional for high-risk repairs, such as installing gutters or pruning trees.
- If you are using a ladder, always choose the right one for the job. Choosing a ladder that is too short could tempt you to reach out or stand on the top step to reach your objective. Both are bad decisions.
- Don’t forget to always maintain three points of contact when climbing or descending a ladder.
As you map your future, you always want to climb the right ladder. Applying the principles of risk management to your off-duty activities will allow you, your fellow Soldiers and your families to enjoy a safe and happy future with many great adventures ahead!
