A 37-year-old Sergeant First Class assigned to Fort Bragg, North Carolina, died in a military freefall parachuting mishap 13 March 2023 in Homestead, Florida, at 1010 local. The Soldier served as the jump master and was the designated stack leader, landing first of 11 jumpers. During his landing sequence, the mishap jumper initiated a turn to base and final to set up his approach where he impacted the street in a diving attitude. The Soldier was evacuated via life flight to the local medical center. At or near his arrival, the Soldier went into cardiac arrest with weak to no pulse. Medical teams performed emergency surgery but were unsuccessful in re-establishing a pulse and the Soldier died. A U.S. Army Combat Readiness Center Centralized Accident Investigation team is leading the investigation.
Since 2018, the Army has lost an average of one Soldier a year to military parachuting mishaps. This mishap was the first military parachuting fatality of FY23.
