On the Nose

Although many years have passed, I distinctly recall the practical exercise on changing a tire as a young private just starting my military career. The reason why this memory stands out is due to a run-in with a particularly loud and brash drill instructor who happened to see me working without eye protection. The ensuing 15-minute PT session ensured I learned one thing — personal protective equipment is important.

Preparing for a Disaster

National Preparedness Month, sponsored by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and held annually in September, is a good reminder that natural and manmade disasters can strike at any time. It's important to have a planned response when you're at work, home, on vacation or on the road.

My wife says people can be summed up into two categories: those who err on the side of caution and sound judgment (her), and the accident prone (of course, me). Seeing me in short sleeves provides all the evidence needed to support her hypothesis.

It's a Gas!

Since this was a weekday, I was hoping for an easy shift. Little did I know that wouldn’t be the case. At some point, rumors began circulating that a battalion-level room inspection was scheduled for the next morning. I watched the camera system as a cleaning frenzy ensued and bag after bag of garbage was marched out of the building and into an overflowing dumpster.
