Across the Army, Soldiers have many different hobbies to occupy their off-duty time. One of the main hobbies I often hear about is Soldiers working on their private motor vehicles. While doing the work themselves may help save money on a costly repair or modification, it can be dangerous if they don’t have the proper tools to do the job safely.

As snowflakes began hitting the road, I tightened my grip on the steering wheel of my speed-racing Honda Civic. I could picture my front-wheel-drive hatchback doing 360s down the highway. But I had an important briefing at work and, as the leader, calling out wasn’t an option. I’d have to fight the worsening conditions on Interstate 78.

As the season's first winter mix began to fall, I made the prudent decision to send my team home early, advising them to beat the impending traffic. Unfortunately, I didn't take my own advice.
