Finger-Splittin' Good

Things were going smoothly until my right ring finger got caught between the log and the splitter’s cast iron back plate. The sudden force of 27 tons of hydraulic pressure on my finger was excruciating! My first instinct was to pull my hand out of the way, but this may have actually caused more harm than good, as the flesh on the tip of my finger, to include the nail, was completely ripped off.

Light Up the Night Safely

Unfortunately, a lot of folks don’t take the major hazards related to fireworks seriously. Some people enjoy igniting firecrackers or cherry bombs and holding them in their hand as long as possible before throwing them — sometimes at each other. People just don’t seem to understand what can happen with these unsafe practices.

Shock and Ow!

I was flat on my back on the basement floor when I heard my wife’s voice from upstairs saying, “What did you do?” Not wanting to worry her, I lied and replied, “Nothing!” She soon knew the truth, though, when I slunk upstairs to the breaker box and started flipping switches — again.

On the Nose

Although many years have passed, I distinctly recall the practical exercise on changing a tire as a young private just starting my military career. The reason why this memory stands out is due to a run-in with a particularly loud and brash drill instructor who happened to see me working without eye protection. The ensuing 15-minute PT session ensured I learned one thing — personal protective equipment is important.

Preparing for a Disaster

Eventually, the pressure became too much and the 2x4 broke loose and shot off the edge. Gravity won again, and I followed the board and slammed into the roof.
