While holding onto a rock to stabilize myself, I felt the ground beneath my feet begin to give way. At this point, any movement made my grip weaker. Eventually, I couldn’t hold on any longer and fell. I slid backward for 40 yards down an extremely steep ridge. Luckily, I hit a tree and flipped onto my stomach, still sliding down at a rapid pace.

In a Bind

When the over-tensioned binder released, all of the energy propelled the cheater bar like a catapult. On the way up, the bar struck the Soldier under the chin, breaking his jaw in three places. The force of the blow was so great that it lifted him off his feet and threw him from the trailer to the ground.

Don't Assume Anything

It was a typical early summer day at Abu Hammad Air Base, Egypt, located in the Nile Delta northeast of Cairo. I was assigned as an AH-64A maintenance test pilot (MTP) and adviser to the Apache Technical Assistance Field Team. Despite the challenges of English as a second language for my Egyptian counterparts, I thought I had a good handle on how the local pilots expressed themselves. I was wrong.

Looking Back

Although Sprain is not his real name, his story is true. He is a smart rider. He has plans further out than tomorrow, so he does not take risks just for the thrill of it. On this day, however, a series of choices and events will conspire against Sprain that will cause him to give up the motorcycle for some time. Today, he will wreck his bike.
