A Deadly Hunt

A few years ago, when I was a member of a search-and-rescue team in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains, another team asked for our help locating a missing hunter. We responded and I set out as part of a three-man all-terrain vehicle (ATV) team. I recall it was a beautiful, clear, cool, crisp morning as we drove south to the Sangre de Cristo Range.

Off the Beaten Path

I never gave much thought to off-duty safety. For me, it was just something I always had to hear about before being released for a long weekend. The message was always the same: Have a plan, wear your personal protective equipment (PPE), take a buddy, and on and on and on. Fortunately, I eventually got the message — but it nearly cost me my life.

Rocked and Rolled

It was a typical day in Tennessee — nice weather, beautiful scenery and plenty of fun things to do. I was in high school and, like many people throughout the country, raced all-terrain vehicles during my free time. I’d never taken an official safety course, but my father did a good job giving me instruction on proper riding techniques.

Trailer Trouble

I tried to pull my hand out, but it wouldn't budge. So, there I was, halfway in the road with my hand caught and bleeding and nobody around.

No Shortcuts in Tractor Safety

Growing up in the South, I operated tractors on a regular basis. I always thought the seat belt and rollover protective structure were so stupid. After hearing the details of an unfortunate tractor mishap, I quickly changed my tune.

Confidence Can Be a Killer
