It was a drill weekend and we were heading to the range for hand grenade training. I had just assumed command of my company and was eager to gauge my unit’s range safety program. My predecessor couldn’t execute a thorough handoff with me before I took over; therefore, I had a lot to learn about my new Soldiers.

Range Irresponsibility

A major component of any training, military or civilian, is risk reduction. The only way for it to be effective is to implement risk management and not get careless.

Up in Smoke

Just about every Soldier has experienced the CS grenade. While the gas may be uncomfortable, it's an effective training tool and everyone is OK after a short period of time — especially if they’re wearing a protective mask. I learned, however, that these types of grenades can be dangerous if you lose focus during training.

You Bet Your Life

Would you go to Las Vegas and bet your life on one spin of the roulette wheel? I hope not! You’d probably question the intelligence of anyone willing to make such a gamble. Yet, many of our Soldiers bet their lives every day when they don’t use their seat belts or restraints in tactical vehicles. Why is this happening?

Guiding Right

Before deploying to Iraq, our transportation unit was understrength, so other Soldiers in the state that had an 88M military occupational specialty (transportation) were pulled from their units to head out with us. This caused some unforeseen issues. For instance, when ground guiding, these Soldiers used different hand and arm signals. At times, this could be frustrating.
