There comes a time in an adult’s life when you just want to say, “What were you thinking?” That’s exactly what I said one July morning after reading a young Soldier’s Facebook posts.

Whether it’s a convoy operation or a trip with your family, it’s always a good idea to perform a map or route reconnaissance. You’ll have the advantage of locating rest stops, places to fill up or, just maybe, possible road hazards.

In my younger years as an enlisted Marine, I had all the qualities of an effective warfighter — strength, tenacity, energy, speed and fearlessness. Those qualities, however, didn’t necessarily translate well to safe motorcycle riding.
