As my car began to overturn, I started praying. After rolling four times, my car came to rest on its wheels and water flowed through every opening. I was scared, but at least I was alive and able to move.

The Road More Traveled

I’d driven cross-country three times before and thought I knew my limits. I particularly enjoyed driving at night because there was less traffic. However, in the past, there was at least one other person in the vehicle with me. This time I would be going solo.

Everyone has heard the saying, “If a tree falls in the forest and no one is around, does it make a sound?” That same saying can be applied to driving. We just change the wording a bit so it says, “If a vehicle gets into an accident and your vehicle is not around, do you have to be involved?” The answer is “no.”

A Deafening Silence

This tragic — but preventable — accident was a very difficult lesson to learn. I did several things right that night. I didn’t get behind the wheel after drinking and I wore my seat belt when we made that fateful trip to the store for food and drinks. But I also failed. I didn’t ensure everyone else in the truck was buckled up. Unfortunately, it cost two people, including my best friend, their lives.

A Cold Introduction

My first assignment after entering active duty was on Fort Drum, New York. As someone who’d spent his entire life in South Carolina and Georgia, it was an environmental shock to say the least.
