Animal Crossing

I was about 500 feet from the exit for Fort Belvoir, riding in the right lane on a poorly lit section of the road. I was almost home free when I suddenly saw a gray mass in front of me. Whatever it was, it didn’t seem to know what it wanted to do.

The Most Critical Piece

A helmet is the most critical piece of personal protective equipment (PPE) a rider wears. According to Army policy, riders are required to wear a helmet while riding a motorcycle or all-terrain vehicle (ATV). It only makes sense if you want to prevent traumatic and fatal head injuries.

2021 was a Rough Year

In fiscal 2021, motorcycles accounted for 24 Soldier fatalities, up two from the previous fiscal year. Four-wheeled PMVs accounted for an additional 44 fatalities, a 52% increase from last year. There were also six pedestrian/non-motorist fatalities, which was up by one from fiscal 2020, for a total of 74 off-duty PMV-related fatalities.
