Private motor vehicle safety is a topic that often doesn’t get the attention it deserves. It might be a small part of a final formation briefing or unit PMV inspections, but rarely does it garner the focus of events such as range operations or tactical convoys.

It was my first deployment to Afghanistan, and I was involved in a nighttime mixed-aircraft, six-ship air assault to insert troops for a cordon-and-search for a high-value target. It was also my first air assault of the deployment.

During my first deployment to Afghanistan, my unit experienced an unfortunate mishap that cost a Soldier his life and cut short the military careers of three others.
