There is a dragon out there that has cost the U.S. Army Reserve (USAR) two platoons worth of Soldiers over the past three years due to mishaps. This is an unsustainable loss to which we must find a solution.

Frozen on the Slopes

I then noticed that Jim — by far the better skier — was starting to fall behind. I yelled to see where he was, and he told me to go to the edge of the trees and wait for him there. I didn’t make it far before I heard Jim say he was having a hard time skiing. Jim is the type of guy who won’t complain unless he’s dying, so when he said he was having difficulty moving his legs, I was concerned.

An Unintended Highway Exit

Every day, safety is enforced in my company through risk assessments, briefs or training. The fact is my job is very safe due to the restrictions, policies and regulations put into place to mitigate many of the hazards I may face. The most dangerous portion of my day actually takes place when I’m on the ground, driving back and forth to work.

Sitting Ducks

Within minutes, the water reached our calves. Still, never once did any of us consider what could happen next. If we had, we would have put on our life jackets, but no one even mentioned it. Just as the shore came into sight, a large wave struck the boat, causing it to capsize.

Out of Control

The drive to Colorado was enjoyable as I saw the trees turning beautiful shades of gold, brown and red. As luck would have it, winter came early to Colorado, bringing with it the first of many snowstorms. We didn’t get a lot of snow where I lived in west Texas and, when it did fall, the highways, roads and schools all closed. Because of that, I didn’t know how to handle driving in the snow.
