The Edge of Disaster

It was spring and I was stationed at beautiful Camp Pendleton, California. I had just recently married my high school sweetheart, was two months from pinning on the rank of corporal and was gearing up to go on my first deployment. I thought my life could not get better until I received a phone call from my older brother asking if I was interested in purchasing one of his motorcycles.

Reduce Your Risk with Good Gear

As hard as it may be, resist riding on days when you know there are other factors that might make the ride risky. Remember, the weather is not the only factor to consider when deciding to take the bike out for a spin.

Reducing Your Risk on the Road

Several years ago, I experienced an event that altered my family’s life. While riding my Harley-Davidson Road King, I was struck head-on by a pickup truck. From my perspective, there was nothing I could have done to prevent this accident. On the other hand, the young man driving the pickup could have done several things differently, most notably, recognizing the right of way.

Identifying Unsafe Motorcycle Helmets

It’s clear motorcycle helmets save lives. To help protect the lives of riders, the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) requires all motorcycle helmets sold in the United States meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 218. This standard defines minimum levels of performance that helmets must meet to protect the head and brain in the event of a crash.
