For several years, the U.S. Army has experienced an increase in Soldiers dying in off-duty mishaps. Whether they were driving a vehicle, riding a motorcycle, swimming, walking or handling a privately owned weapon, one thing always seems to ring true: either the mishap Soldier or another individual did not apply real-time risk management (RM) before engaging in that off-duty activity.

Good Training Pays Off

It was my girlfriend’s birthday and I wanted to surprise her by riding my Suzuki GSX-R1000 to Atlanta from Valdosta, Georgia. To get an early start, I cranked up my bike at 2 a.m. and headed up Interstate 75 North. Little did I know it was going to be a very short trip.

Take Ego Out of the Equation

As an Army pilot with 750 flight hours, I’m still fairly new to the world of aviation. Everyone knows what it’s like to be the new guy — you want to prove yourself and never want to be the person who throws in the towel when training runs late or you’re not feeling well. But sometimes it is necessary to take a step back and reevaluate what you’re doing to avoid making a mistake that could lead to a catastrophe.

A Shocking Experience
