A Lesson in Humility

During a recent trip to Acadia National Park in Maine, I learned a few valuable lessons: I am not as smart as I thought I was, and following established rules and policies protects me from harm. These lessons, although embarrassing, later saved me from greater harm in a different national park and may have prevented a tragic accident in my unit a few weeks later.

Hamstrung

Many years ago, I was a young platoon leader (PL) deployed to Mosul, Iraq. One afternoon, after completing a round of checkpoint missions, I heard about a track meet the forward operating base was hosting. As a hard-charging PL, I took my job seriously, but I also believed in personal downtime.

Going Down with the Ship

My friend and I had been planning all week to take his 16-foot catamaran sailing on Santa Rosa Sound, Florida. After I made the three-hour trip to his house, he greeted me in his driveway and suggested we get going soon because bad weather was forecasted. That should have been my first clue that this trip wasn’t going to end well.

Without a Paddle

After returning home from a year in Afghanistan, I couldn’t wait to take a nice, relaxing trip with family and friends. So, two weeks after redeployment/reintegration, we packed our bags, coolers and paddleboards and headed for the beach. There, we’d join three other families already enjoying the beautiful weather. Little did I know that this trip would be anything but relaxing.

If you’re like me, you cherish every opportunity to take a break from your busy work schedule to toss a line into the water, regardless the time of year. These occasions are especially important to me now as my career is beginning to sunset and fly fishing provides me with quiet, peaceful moments.

Avoiding Downhill Disasters

The silver lining to the shorter, colder days of winter is the snow and the outdoor sports typically reserved for this time of year. Winter activities such as skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling, sledding and ice skating provide fun, excitement, fresh air and good exercise for all ages.
